Uganda Student Chapter visits New Hope Children’s Hostel

The People to People International Kampala Student Chapter recently gave back by supporting and visiting the New Hope Hostel, which supports children with cancer in Uganda.

The New Hope Hostel was started by the Kawempe Health Center in 2016 to support the Uganda Cancer Institute in helping the children affected with this disease. The Hostel provides accommodations, meals and social services. It is under the leadership of Dr. Baguma, who was instrumental in allowing the PTPI Kampala Chapter to visit and support the hostel.

The children go to the Uganda Cancer Institute for medication and treatment, but New Hope Hostel is a home away from home for them. It accommodates those that live a distance from Kampala. It allows the children to be easily monitored and to get their medications and treatment on time. Since 2016, more than 315 children have been hosted at the hostel. Sadly, not all get to go home, but others have been able to heal and move on with their lives.

During the PTPI Kampala Chapter’s visit, they found a uniquely operated center, with 24 children and 24 caretakers, allowing for the children to each have a caretaker. However, in the case of critical conditions, a child can have two caretakers. The caretakers are mostly relatives but there are day and night shift nurses that keep monitoring the kids as well. The average age of children at the hostel was between infancy and ten years. They are being treated for many types of cancer, including blood, muscle and eye cancer.

The Kampala Student Chapter brought food and supplies for the children staying at the hostel. Together, the chapter raised ninety thousand Uganda shillings for the hostel children. The items they brought included bread, milk, sugar, soap, toilet tissues, cooking oil, rice and porridge. The children were thrilled with the visitors and appreciated the kindness.

The children and the students also had fun making their rooms entertaining by buying stickers and helping them paste them on their walls. The children enjoyed the activity, new friends and decorations and the students in the PTPI Chapter were just glad they had a smile on their faces.

Each member was able to share a message with the parents and children and endeavored to let them know that the students of the chapter care and will keep coming to visit them and offer any support they can.
